Summary: Missing, silent or delayed alerts on your phone? The Speakap app has a built-in Push Notifications Diagnostics tool that runs an instant, automated health check and shows exactly why alerts may not be reaching your device.
For a full overview of how notifications work in Speakap, see Notifications: Overview and Settings.
How to start the diagnostics
The tool is only available in the iOS and Android apps. Desktop browsers use a different notification system, so there is no desktop version of this check.
On an Android phone
- Open the Speakap app on your Android phone.
- Tap the menu button (the three stacked lines) in the bottom right corner.
- Tap Settings (scroll down slightly if it is hidden from view).
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap Push Notifications.
- Tap Push Notifications Diagnostics to start the check.
On an iPhone
- Open the Speakap app on your iPhone.
- Tap the menu icon (the three horizontal lines) in the bottom right corner.
- Tap Settings (scroll down if you do not see it right away).
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap Push Notifications Diagnostics to start the check.
What the tool checks
The diagnostics run a step-by-step check across the layers involved in delivering a push notification:
- Device token: has your phone generated and registered a unique security token with Apple's Push Notification service (APNs) or Google's Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM)?
- App permission status: is your phone's operating system blocking Speakap notifications at the device level?
- Server connection: can Speakap's servers reach your specific phone over your current mobile data or Wi-Fi connection?
The check is read only. It is a simple connection test that does not change your settings, remove you from any groups or touch your chat history.
If the check finds a problem
Write down the error details or take a quick screenshot. Then do a clean uninstall and reinstall of the app; this makes your phone generate a brand-new push notification token. For more fixes, see Troubleshooting: When Push Notifications Are Not Working.
Frequently asked questions
Can I run the Push Notifications Diagnostics from a desktop computer?
No. Push notifications rely on hardware tokens tied to the mobile operating systems (iOS and Android). Desktop browsers use an entirely different alerting system, so the diagnostics tool only exists in the mobile apps.
What should I do if the check returns an error or warning?
Note the error details or take a screenshot. Then do a clean uninstall and reinstall of the app to generate a fresh notification token. If the warning persists, email us at support@speakap.com with your screenshot and device details so our technical team can review your setup.
Will running the diagnostics disrupt my chats or erase my data?
Not at all. The check is a passive connection test. It does not alter your profile settings, remove you from groups, change your notification choices or affect your message history.
