Summary: Can't post an Update to a certain Business Unit (BU), Local Department (LD), or group? This is almost always a permissions setting, not a bug. This guide explains why it happens and how to get the right access through your own organization.
The issue: cannot post an Update
You may find that you cannot publish an Update to specific parts of the network:
- BU (Business Unit): a larger organizational segment, like a location, brand, or region.
- LD (Local Department): a specific team, store, or department.
- Groups: topic-based or team-based groups, like 'All Managers' or 'HR News'.
Why does this happen?
This is not a technical bug or a system glitch. Speakap networks use a role-based permissions system managed by your network administrators, sometimes combined with a preference setting on the business unit, department, or group itself.
If you cannot post to a certain BU, LD, or group, your current user role does not have the required post or publish permission for that specific audience. Administrators use these permissions to keep communication relevant and targeted to the right employees.
If you selected multiple recipients for the same Update, permissions are checked individually for each one. You may have posting rights for some of your chosen recipients but not others. In that case, remove the recipient you don't have access to, or request the right permissions before publishing.
How to resolve it
Permissions are managed by your organization, not by Speakap support, so the fix starts internally:
- Identify the specific audience. Note down the exact Business Unit, Department, or Group you are trying to post an Update to.
- Contact your manager or HR. Reach out to your direct manager, your HR department, or your internal Speakap network administrator.
- Request access. Explain that you need to post Updates to that specific BU, LD, or group, and ask them to update your user role or permissions in the network settings.
If needed, your internal administrators can contact Speakap support on your behalf.
Still stuck?
Ask your network administrator first; they manage posting permissions and can fix this directly. If they can't resolve it, email us at support@speakap.com with your network name, the exact BU, department, or group you are trying to post to, and a screenshot, and we'll help you out.
