Who read my News item? Tracking views and readership

Summary: This guide is for communicators, authors, and managers who want to measure the reach of their announcements. It explains how to see real-time view counts on a news item, check exactly which colleagues have or haven't opened it, and what to use for high-priority updates.

1. Finding your view count

To keep your workforce engaged, it helps to know whether your message actually reaches your teams. Speakap tracks views automatically, giving you direct visibility into how your content performs.

Who can see this data: For user privacy, readership data is restricted. Only the network administrator and the author of the specific news item can view the detailed breakdown of who has read or missed the post.

To check your article's views on desktop or mobile:

  1. Go to the News homepage or find the article in your Feed.
  2. Scroll to the very bottom of the news item card.
  3. Find the views icon (an eye) right next to the likes and reactions. The number next to the eye is your total view count.

2. Read vs. unread lists

The counter gives you a quick high-level look at engagement. Clicking or tapping the eye icon opens a detailed tracking window with two lists:

  • Read: The default view shows an alphabetized list of the users who have opened the article.
  • Unread: Tapping the "Unread" tab switches to everyone in your targeted audience who has not yet opened the news item. This list is very useful when you need to follow up with specific teams or people about unread changes.

3. Need more than views? Make it acknowledgeable

For critical compliance mandates, safety updates, or urgent operational changes, simply tracking views might not be enough. When composing your post on desktop, enable the acknowledgeable news item option. This adds a mandatory confirmation button at the bottom of the article, so recipients actively verify they have read and understood it. Read more in Making News Items Acknowledgeable.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Group Admin see who read a news post published by a different manager?

No. Detailed user-by-user read lists are strictly tied to the author and network admins. Even if you hold global or local administrative rights, you cannot see the names of who viewed a post unless your account authored and published it.

Does the view count go up if the same employee opens the article multiple times?

The main counter tracks overall views. But in the breakdown behind the eye icon, each employee's name appears only once, so you get an accurate headcount of unique readers.

Why can't I see the eye icon or view count on standard Feed updates?

The read/unread tracking is exclusive to news items. Regular updates and group posts show social interactions (likes and comments) but do not track individual read logs.
