How to change the name of a group conversation

Summary: Group conversations name themselves based on the participants included. To keep your active chats organized, you can give a multi-user thread a custom title. This guide shows the steps on desktop and in the iOS and Android apps.

On desktop

To rename a group chat, log in via a desktop web browser and follow these steps:

  1. Click Private Messages in the top-right navigation banner (message icon).
  2. Select the group conversation you would like to rename from your chat list.
  3. Click the Details button in the chat header.
  4. Select the edit title icon next to the current group chat title. A text input field appears where the current title is.
  5. Type the new name for your group conversation.
  6. Press Save to save the updated title.

In the iOS and Android apps

To rename a group chat in the mobile app, follow these steps:

  1. Tap Private Messages in the bottom navigation banner (message icon).
  2. Select the group conversation you would like to rename from your chat list.
  3. Tap the name on top in the header.
  4. Select the text on the right of the Name field in the middle of the screen. The keyboard appears automatically.
  5. Type the new name for your group conversation.
  6. Tap the checkmark to save the updated title, or X to cancel.
