How to open the developer console

Summary: A developer console is a diagnostic tool that logs background software operations, which helps isolate platform errors. This guide shows you how to open the console in Google Chrome, capture network logs, and gather the exact details the Speakap Support team needs to fix your issue.

1. Purpose and browser requirements

The developer console logs background data about the backend operations of our site and application. The information in this console is vital for our engineering team to diagnose and troubleshoot technical issues or bugs.

Prerequisite: To follow this guide, you must use Google Chrome as your internet browser.

2. Opening the developer console

If the Support team asks for a screenshot of your console logs, open the developer window using a keyboard shortcut or via the browser menu.

Keyboard shortcuts:

  • On Windows: Press Ctrl + Shift + J at the same time.
  • On a Mac: Press Cmd + Option + J at the same time.

Manual alternative:

  • Right-click anywhere on the webpage and select Inspect from the context menu to open the developer panel.

3. Capturing network requests and responses

Once the developer console opens, switch your focus to the network traffic to find the source of the error:

  1. Click the Network tab at the top of the developer console window.
  2. With the console open, repeat the exact action on the webpage that is causing the trouble or triggering the error.
  3. Look through the generated list of requests and find the specific request containing the error information. This failing request is typically highlighted in red. Click on it to open its details.
  4. Take a full screenshot of your entire screen, making sure the selected network request data is completely visible.
  5. Click the Response tab within that same details panel. Take a full screenshot of this text, or copy and paste the raw text response so you can send it to us.

4. Sending the information to Support

To help our team solve the problem as quickly as possible, include all of this in your message:

  • The full screenshots of the network request and the corresponding Response tab (or the copied text logs).
  • The precise date and time the error occurred.
  • The primary email address of the user who is experiencing the error.

Still stuck?

Email us at support@speakap.com with the screenshots, the date and time of the error, and the affected user's email address, and we'll help you out.
