Managing Comments and Reactions Network-Wide and Per Post

Summary: Network administrators and post authors each have their own controls for turning comments and reactions on or off. This guide explains the network-wide settings, the per-post overrides, and the key difference between disabling interactions and locking a post.

1. Network-wide controls (Network Administrators)

Network administrators can set default platform preferences by enabling or disabling comments and reactions across the entire network. Comments and reactions can be managed completely independently of each other.

These network-wide preferences apply automatically to all major content formats: updates, news items, events, and polls.

To configure the network-wide defaults:

  1. Go to Network settings.
  2. Click the Preferences section.
  3. Locate the Comments and Reactions section on the General page to opt in or out of either interaction type.

2. Individual post customization (authors and admins)

To give teams more freedom, the author of a piece of content (or a network administrator) can override the network defaults for a specific post.

For updates, events, and polls

  1. Locate the published post on the Feed.
  2. Click the three-dot menu icon in the top right corner of the post.
  3. Select Enable/Disable Comments or Enable/Disable Reactions, depending on what you want to change.

For news items

  1. Open the news item in editing mode.
  2. Locate the interaction checkboxes on the right side of the page.
  3. Select or deselect your preferences before clicking publish.

Note: Changing options on an individual post only affects that specific item. It does not change your personal defaults or the network settings going forward. Only a network admin can permanently change the network-wide defaults.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to historical comments and reactions when settings change?

It depends on whether the change was made by an administrator network-wide or by an author on a single post:

  • Network-wide admin changes: These are not retroactive and only apply going forward. Existing posts still display whatever comments and reactions they collected before the change.
  • Individual author changes: If an author manually disables comments or reactions on their own existing post, all historical comments and reactions on that specific post are hidden from view immediately.

How is disabling interactions different from locking a post?

Both tools block new feedback, but they treat existing interactions differently:

Feature action What happens to new interactions? What happens to existing content?
Disabling (author override) Blocked completely. Hidden immediately; old comments and reactions are no longer displayed.
Locking a post Blocked completely. Frozen as is; historical comments and reactions remain visible to the network.

For more about locking, see Locking a post.
