GIFs on Speakap

Article summary: A picture says more than a thousand words, so imagine how well you can express yourself with a GIF! Speakap supports playable GIFs for your updates and comments. This guide explains how to search for, add, and link GIFs across the platform.

1. Adding a GIF via GIPHY

Adding a GIF is incredibly simple using our built-in GIPHY integration, allowing you to search and select animations without leaving the platform.

When you go to compose an Update or write a Comment, you'll see a dedicated GIF option alongside the standard file attachments:

  1. Click or tap the GIF icon.
  2. Pick from the most popular trending GIFs that immediately pop up, or look for a specific reaction by typing a keyword into the GIPHY search bar.
  3. Select the GIF that best captures your message to instantly insert it into your post.

Note: this feature needs to be enabled by a Network Administrator in the Network Settings - Preferences tab

2. Adding a GIF via Tenor (Web Links)

If you prefer a specific GIF from Tenor, you can also easily add it by linking it directly in your update or comment:

  1. Find your GIF: Locate a GIF you like on the Tenor website (we’re not judging, but cats always do well on the internet...).
  2. Copy the link: Use the website's share options to copy the direct URL of the GIF.
  3. Paste the link: Paste the copied URL directly into your Speakap update or comment text box. The platform will automatically convert the link and embed the playable GIF into your message.
  4. Submit and enjoy! See how those likes pour in.

3. Supported Message Types and Devices

Adding and viewing GIFs is fully supported across every platform (Desktop web browser, iOS, and Android).

You can add a GIF to the following message types:

  • Updates (Main timeline posts)
  • Comments (Specifically replies under Updates, News, Polls, and Events)

4. Known Limitations

To maintain platform security and performance, there are a few limitations to GIF support on Speakap:

  • Direct Uploads: It is not possible to directly upload manual .gif files from your computer or phone storage as you would a standard picture. You must use the integrations or web links.
  • Supported Providers: If you are pasting a GIF link (like the Tenor method above), we only support links from websites that are officially registered as an embed.ly provider. You can check the full list of supported sites here: embed.ly/providers.
